The Basics :
- Always ask the pro shop for the course dress code, most courses have one and some
are very strict. Normally gents require golf shoes, trousers (or tailored
shorts), and collared shirt, ladies require golf shoes, trousers (or knee length
skirt or tailored shorts) and shirt (clubs seem to be getting less strict with
ladies shirts, to be safe wear a collar). Be careful with bright colours.
No jeans or trainers !
- Repair all divots on the fairways and all ball marks
on the green.
- Always rake bunkers.
- Keep quiet, do not talk during another player's
preparation or swing.
- Turn your mobile phone off. There are not allowed on
the majority of courses or club houses.
- Do not yell out following a shot, unless to warn other
players of danger from your ball, the game standard is to shout "FORE".
- Don't stand in a place on the green where your shadow
is on the hole or over another players line of play.
- Protect other players line of play, do not walk across
it, walk around.
- Mark your ball once you reach the green, only
replace it when it is your turn to play.
- Leave the green as soon as you have putted out. Mark
your scorecard at the next tee.
- Be aware of slow play. You should keep up with the
group in front. Be ready to take your shot as soon as it becomes your
turn. Let the group behind through if you are holding them up.
- Don't spend too much time in the rough looking for lost
balls. In most competitions you have 5 minutes to look for your ball, but
if it's a friendly game move on and take your penalty.
- Keep the safety of your fellow players in mind at all times, don't take a
swing until other players are at a safe distance. Keep well away from the
swing of other players.
- Observe the instructions / rules of the course. If
instructed, let the following group tee off when you reach the green.
- Ensure the group in front are at a safe distance before
taking your shot.
- Treat other players as you would like to be treated.
- Observe the rules of golf at all times.
- Finally, at the end of the round, shake hands with your
fellow players, congratulate the winners, console the losers, and thank them for
their company. At the end of the day, the great pleasure of the game is the time
you get spend with your fellow golfers.
